When your loved one struggles with addiction, you can feel scared, lonely, and helpless. His or her brain has been hijacked by addiction, making it extremely difficult to stop. It is possible to convince someone to go to treatment. Encouragement and support are necessary for a person’s recovery process.

Tell your loved one how you feel, but do not be judgmental. Let him or her know how you feel without making accusations or becoming confrontational. Sometimes tone of voice can also imply judgment or shame. Make it a conversation, not a confrontation.

When talking, use the word “I” instead of “you,” and your feelings will come across less judgmental and degrading. Keep the conversation positive.

Coordinate an intervention with family members and friends. Everyone can prepare what he or she wants to say. It can be very stressful and difficult, but this is a great opportunity to show
your loved one how valuable he or she is to everyone involved.

After the intervention, your loved one may refuse treatment or they might not be ready. Addiction makes it hard for a person to have the determination and commitment to go to treatment and makes it hard for someone to stop using. A person’s body craves drugs or alcohol. Withdrawal symptoms cause him or her to feel physically sick for days.

He or she must make many changes in life when going through treatment. Convincing
someone to go to treatment is challenging, but does happen. When your loved one decides to go to treatment, continue to show support and encouragement. Keep a positive attitude and provide some guidance for treatment. This will show the individual how much you love them and care about their well-being.

A person with an addiction is not alone, and their loved ones are not alone either. Addiction affects everyone. Recovery does happen. Continue to show love, support, and a positive attitude for your loved one’s journey to recovery.
